Salem Millwork and Truss, Inc., a custom commercial and residential stair manufacturer located in Western Pa., has been building handcrafted wooden stairs for over 30 years. Known for their quality products, Salem manufactures any type of stair from the common basement and box stairs to the more complex stairs including flared, circular and spiral configurations. These are distributed through lumber yards, home centers and chain stores in Western Pennsylvania, Eastern Ohio, and Northern West Virginia.
Salem’s owners, Mike and Kim Ferris, were searching for custom boarding stairs for their 45’ Californian Motor Yacht but they couldn’t find anything other than the standard old fiberglass or plastic stairs. Neither of which would fit their needs. They wanted something classy and the right height to board their boat. The only way to make that happen was to build them in-house.
Calling on their skilled craftsmen, Mike and Kim designed and built the stairs they needed to board their yacht. “We wanted slanted risers with lights in them so they were easy to see in the dark, a custom width to meet our marina’s restriction, a storage compartment, a comfortable rise with wide treads and a landing.”
Most of all they wanted stairs that would last for years without cracking or discoloring. They got their wish in more ways than one. Not only did they get the custom boarding stairs they wanted, but they also opened a new division of Salem Millwork called Salem Boarding Stairs. This division of the company builds stairs to meet boater’s needs. From the standard straight set to flared or circular stairs, you dream it up, and Salem will build it.
Salem Boarding Stairs are manufactured using a laminated wood substrate which is then completely encased with resin and finally coated with 3M’s Laminex Lexar , a coating designed for the marine industry. Laminex, which is available in either a gloss white or black color, is a high performance coating based on Polyurea Technology that is exceptionally abrasion and tear resistant. This heavy- duty protective coating is virtually indestructible and it makes the stairs impervious to the harshest of marine environments. As an added attraction, it can be painted to match your boat. Salem Boarding stairs take advantage of the strength, versatility and workability of wood along with the durability of the laminex coating to produce an inexpensive and superior alternative to fiberglass and plastic stair construction. Salem boarding stairs are available in stock sizes in both straight and circular configurations as well as any and all custom designs. Surprisingly, these stairs weigh little more than their fiberglass cousins. When is comes to custom stairs the people at Salem say “if you have the need for it, we can build it.”
Salem is also producing boarding/helm stools and will soon be introducing a line of dock boxes. See them on line at www.boardingstairs.com or call to talk to one of our expert builders, 888- Salem15 (888-725-3615) |
